Project Coordinator- Health and Nutrition

Location: Syria - Deir ez-Zor

Job purpose:

The Project Coordinator will lead the effective implementation, coordination, and monitoring of health, nutrition, and protection/child protection activities across the project location in Deir-ez-Zor. Under the direct supervision of the NES Area Manager, the position ensures timely delivery of quality services to vulnerable populations, including IDPs, returnees, and host communities across more than 35 health centers. The role involves close coordination with Ministry of Health (MoH) staff, local stakeholders, and technical/sectoral working groups to align activities with sector standards and community needs. The Project Coordinator will also liaise with internal support functions, particularly procurement, People & Culture (P&C), and MEAL, to ensure smooth field operations. This includes leading procurement processes for project-related goods and services, overseeing human resource management of a large project team in coordination with P&C, and working closely with the MEAL team to track progress, address implementation issues, and improve project performance. Additionally, the role involves planning, implementing, and following up on intensive capacity-building events for project staff and health workers. This position plays a key role in maintaining accountability, safety, and compliance with donor and organizational requirements.

Major Responsibilities

  • Activity:

1- Project Implementation:

  • Collaborate with the NES Area Manager to develop and supervise project activities. ensuring alignment with project/program goals and objectives.

  • Following up monthly on the Detailed Implementation Plan (DIP) aligned to the project.

  • Smooth project activities implementation at the site.

  • Plan and execute of health, nutrition and protection/child protection activities and interventions in the targeted locations/health centers according to project timelines and objectives.

  • Coordinate with partners and stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of activities.

  • Monitor project progress and make adjustments as necessary to achieve.

  • Build and sustain excellent working relationships with MoH and health directorate counterparts, with regular follow-up and engagement, recognizing that government partnership is essential for effective implementation and sustainability.

  • Communicate logistical, administrative, or safety needs clearly and follow up to ensure timely resolution.

  • Ensure all project activities adhere to internal policies, donor regulations, and humanitarian standards.

    2- Coordination:

  • Serve as the primary focal point for the coordination of the project in Deir Ez Zor, ensuring alignment with WVI’s strategic objectives and donor requirements.

  • Liaise with internal departments, including Finance, GAM, MEAL, SCM, Communications, Technical Teams, Field Operations, and others, to ensure smooth and integrated project implementation.

  • Actively participate in external coordination platforms, such as the local health directorate meetings in Deir-ez-Zor and nutrition sector meetings in Damascus, to ensure alignment with sector priorities and strengthen partnership with key stakeholders.

  • Maintain close coordination with partners, local authorities, UN agencies, working groups, and other humanitarian actors to enhance synergies, promote complementarity, and avoid duplication of efforts.

3- Reporting and Documentation

  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of narrative and financial reports in line with donor requirements as per the MoU and WVI standards.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including activity reports, PMIS updates, meeting minutes, incident reports, and other relevant records.
  • Support the development and periodic update of project work plans/PIP, procurement plans, budget plans, and logical frameworks.
  • Support data collection and documentation of lessons learned and challenges in collaboration with the MEAL team.
  • Work with the Communications team to document success stories and best practices to inform future programming and contribute to organizational learning.
  • Contribute to internal and donor reports as required, ensuring accuracy and consistency in coordination with NES AM, MEAL, Finance, Communications, GAM and other.

4- Additional Responsibilities:

  • Represent WVI in relevant coordination forums, working groups, local authorities, communities, donor meetings as required, and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Participate in internal planning and meetings and review sessions with the NES team.
  • Ensure safeguarding, Do No Harm, and inclusion principles are applied throughout the project.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the NES Area Manager, consistent with the scope of the role.

Knowledge/Qualifications for the Role

Required Professional Experience:

  • 5 years of relevant professional experience in humanitarian or development programs, preferably in Northeast Syria or similar complex contexts.
  • Proven experience in program management, including planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in team leadership and staff capacity building.
  • Strong background in coordination with local authorities, UN agencies, and INGOs.
  • Prior experience in early health and nutrition is a must.

Required Education, training, license, registration, and certification:

  • University degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in a relevant field ( health, nutrition...etc)
  • Very good in both Arabic and English (written and spoken) is required.

Preferred Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the political, social, and security dynamics in Northeast Syria.
  • Knowledge of local governance structures, tribal dynamics, and community engagement approaches.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in volatile security environments.
  • Knowledge of organizational safeguarding policies and commitment to gender equality and inclusion.

Travel and/or Work Environment Requirement:

  • The position will be based in DEZ, with a requirement and willingness to travel to other WV project sites, including Hassakeh, Raqqa, and other locations across NES, as needed.

Physical Requirements:

  • The position requires a strong field presence and a high level of commitment to program implementation.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluent in Arabic and English, spoken and written
